Doctor of Communication Arts Program in Global Communication (International Program) has been offered by Bangkok University in collaboration with the School of Communication Studies, Ohio University since 1995. Although this program has been well received, a need to revise the curriculum arises. Two of major driving forces are paradigm shifts in communication and media industry due to exponential growth of the Internet and digital technologies and the dynamic global and multicultural environment such as “the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC)”. Educational institutions at all levels must prepare their students for this new social and economic landscape, and an arrival of ASEAN integration and its collaboration with economic giants such as China, India, Japan and South Korea. Bangkok University (BU) as the oldest and largest private university in Thailand with its missions to produce creative graduates with an entrepreneurial spirit for the creative economy is committed to produce personnel and develop human resources qualified as global citizens for the future including the AEC. Accordingly, it is timely that a Ph.D. curriculum in Communication Arts is revised in order to reflect BU’s current missions and satisfy the human resources needs for society development to achieve its developmental goals.
The revised curriculum in Communication Arts is designed to develop researchers and professionals who are able to construct/deconstruct theories and the practice around human and digital communication through different philosophical approaches. It encompasses a range of communication topics and activities from face-to-face conversation to communication via mass media such as television, film, and the Internet, the creative arts and design, the evolution of technology to digital media and the business aspects of the communication industry.
The program is multidisciplinary and aims to produce graduates who are both professional and community-oriented in the field of communication. As two tracks of study – academic track and professional track — are uniquely offered, graduates of this program can enhance their research skills and take either academic or professional career paths.

Over the span of 60 years, we have persistently adapted to meet the demands of the times, witnessing Thailand's social evolution from its developmental era to financial bubbles, globalization, the emergence of the 3G-4G-5G eras, and beyond. Our curricula, teaching methods, facilities, technology, and environment have all undergone a profound evolution, guided by our unwavering belief in "designing the future with your own passion."
Let's journey back to the beginning.
The year 1962, or 2505 in the Thai calendar, was memorable for a number of reasons. The world was witnessing the intensifying Cold War due to the Cuban Missile Crisis. It was the year Bob Dylan took the stage in a New York club, playing "Blowing in the Wind," singing about elusive answers carried away by the wind. The year also marked the debut of the first James Bond film, 'Dr. No,' on theater screens, while the launch of the world's first communication satellite drew the world's gaze towards the stars.
In Thailand, the Cold War left its impact as the United States established a military base in Korat. It was also a year of sorrow when Hurricane Harriet struck and caused severe devastation.
But it was also on Christmas day of that year that a significant event took place—the founding of Thailand's first preeminent private educational institution, Bangkok University. Founded by Dr. Surat Osathanugrah (former chairman of the O. A. N. Photo Association and former vice president of the Thai Photographic Society) and Dr. Pongtip Osathanugrah, with Dr. Charoen Kantawong as its inaugural dean.
During that era of national development, most young individuals aspired to serve in government roles. Nevertheless, these forward-thinking pioneers recognized the pivotal role of private organizations in the country's progress. They were firmly committed to producing skilled and qualified personnel for Thailand's private sector. Ever since that historic day, the university has experienced steady growth, ultimately evolving into the prestigious institution it is today, known as 'Bangkok University' in the year 2527 (1984).
In the present day, Bangkok University stands as a distinguished institution, taking a prominent role in shaping the current era. Our commitment to cultivating generations of graduates, equipped with quality, creativity and an entrepreneurial spirit, has forged them into vital agents of progress in Thai society, adept at navigating the continuously shifting global environment.
