ABOUT THIS PROGRAM

Our Computer Science programme has solid roots in mathematics and engineering, while our innovative department optimises the relevance of the programme by including disciplines such as linguistics, psychology, economics, physics and music.

This study programme includes work experience as part of the curriculum.

Choosing this degree option means alternating between academic and work terms in each study year. This programme is most suitable for students who wish to gain relevant work experience throughout their degree, which can boost your resume and give you an edge for graduate roles.

You are required to work in order to complete your study programme.

All students in this programme need to complete work placements to get their degree.

Your job placement or internship totals 50% or less of your study programme.

Harbour.Space partnered with many businesses and non-profit organisations, and employers collaborate with our students to set learning goals during their work years. We integrate your relevant work experience within a university course curriculum, awarding academic credits and focusing on the skills you want to build. Most of our industry partnerships involve matching you with a job that reflects your educational and career goals, so you gain confidence in the areas you want to work in.

Such degree programmes are commonly found at universities in the USA and Canada, known as Co-op Programmes, and at universities of applied sciences in Germany and Switzerland, referred to as Dual Studies Programmes.

You can count on our career service department for the unpaid roles provided by companies that partner with our university, whereas you can also find yourself internships that are either paid or pay less than regular full-time staff. Each company’s process is different.

As our industry partnership programmes are organised through a close collaboration between the university and companies, your work is likely to be more supervised, structured, and challenging than an internship sourced independently.

Aside from the work experience gained while studying, doing this programme can provide you with many other advantages, such as:

Career Building Skills

Having industry-relevant experience while studying provides you with a unique insight into the professional skills required to succeed in your dream job, such as resume writing, communicating with teams, and networking with like-minded professionals.

Competitive Pay

Some internship programmes pay industry-standard rates, you will know your worth when discussing salaries with future employers.

Career Options

As we allow you to work for different employers in every work term, you can explore career options, which many graduate programmes and internships do not offer. This gives you a competitive edge when applying for graduate roles, as you gain confidence in the areas you want to work in.

Feedback and Collaboration

Students are assigned to companies that have partnered with the university. This means that work roles will be assessed as a part of your degree, and you will have the unique experience of receiving feedback, reflecting on your skills, and collaborating with professionals in a way that is not offered through an independently sourced internship. The guidance provided is invaluable and can help you reflect on your professional and career goals.

Reduced Tuition Fee

Pay 50% less than for our 100% academic degrees.

Extended Time to Complete the Degree

This education option extends the overall time required to complete a degree by one year.

We welcome you to start your transformative journey at any point during the year, be it autumn, winter, spring or summer. Once you receive your acceptance letter, you can start any upcoming 3-week module in your chosen programme. All the missed modules can be easily caught up at the start of next year.

PROGRAM STRUCTURE

In the first year, students obtain the foundational knowledge in mathematics and the basics of programming upon which students will develop understanding of programming and computer science during following years. The courses are mostly given in a form of lectures and takeaway coursework. By the end of this year, students will be able to write programmes and use primary computer science tools.

In the second year the students will be offered both math courses in the field of discrete mathematics and courses in the field of software development and programming languages. Most courses require practical coursework and a course project enabling students to get a feel for the challenges and approaches used in this field. The students will also begin developing software for the Capstone project.

By the end of this year, students will be able to write programmes and use primary computer science tools.

In the third year, students will primarily focus on key computer science subjects including computational theory and cryptography. The practical side of the programme is focused on in-depth understanding of parallel computing, databases, compilers.

At the end of the third year, students will have sufficient theoretical and programming background to tackle computer science problems in professional real world scenarios. A significant amount of time will be dedicated to the development of the Capstone project. The courses are taught by researchers and professionals who practice the courses they teach either academically or by sharing their professional experiences in their field.
