Khon Kaen University is one of Thailand’s major public research universities and the first higher education institution established in the Northeastern region of the country. The university was founded in 1964 under Thailand’s First National Economic Development Plan, which aimed to expand higher education opportunities beyond Bangkok and improve regional development. The institution was created to develop human resources, research, and knowledge that would help address economic and social challenges in Northeastern Thailand, particularly issues related to agriculture, poverty, healthcare, and drought.
The university officially became a legal institution in 1966 under the Khon Kaen University Act. King Bhumibol Adulyadej officially inaugurated the university in 1967 and emphasized the importance of higher education in improving the quality of life for people in the region. KKU began with three founding faculties: Agriculture, Engineering, and Science and Arts, with only 107 students in its first academic year. Over the decades, the university expanded significantly and developed into a comprehensive multidisciplinary institution.
Today, Khon Kaen University includes numerous faculties, colleges, research centers, hospitals, and academic institutes covering fields such as medicine, dentistry, nursing, pharmacy, veterinary medicine, engineering, architecture, technology, business administration, economics, law, humanities, education, agriculture, and computing. The university serves tens of thousands of students and continues to play a major role in education and professional training in Thailand.
KKU is especially recognized for its strengths in health sciences, medical education, engineering, agriculture, and regional research. Srinagarind Hospital, one of the university’s major teaching hospitals, serves as an important healthcare and medical training center for Northeastern Thailand. The university also conducts extensive research focused on solving regional and national issues, including water resource management, public health, biotechnology, environmental sustainability, and rural development.
Research and innovation are central to the university’s mission. In 2009, Khon Kaen University was selected as one of Thailand’s National Research Universities due to its research contributions and academic development. The university continues to strengthen international collaboration through partnerships, exchange programs, and joint research projects with institutions worldwide.
